Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal reported Thursday that the NFL is now targeting 2019 to play a game in China, pushing back previous plans to stage a game in 2018. The year delay gives the NFL extra breathing room to stage a game in China with the Rams as the home team. NFL Executive Vice President/International Mark Waller told Kaplan the league could consider kicking off the 2019 season -- its 100th anniversary -- in China. An additional year of planning could be beneficial given the difficulty the NFL has had in the past playing a game in China. Brady's Patriots were scheduled to play in China in 2007, but the game was canceled.
No NFL game in China in 2018, but 2019 a possibility
The NFL has delayed its plan to hold a game in China in 2018 to 2019. If Tom Brady wants to play an NFL game in China before he retires, the soon-to-be-40-year-old quarterback is going to have to play at least three more seasons. The Rams, who were reportedly set to play the 49ers in 2018, are still expected to be the home team for the 2019 game. The NFL will play five international games in 2017 with four games in London and the Patriots and Raiders playing in Mexico City on Nov. 19. Whether that game would still be against the 49ers or Brady's Patriots is unknown. This content may collect you by Max Nolan
